A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
