Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report preliminary tests show the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in association with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
An important official said the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
