New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
