The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will force the release of investigative files concerning the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. The White House relented after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Both Chambers
The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.
The public have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”
Presidential Signature
This legislation next will be sent to Donald Trump for his approval. Trump signaled on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.
Even though Trump has for months rejected the outcry over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Response
The Democratic party, along with victims and their representatives who were seated in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who stated he worried the measure would make public identifying details of people, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
